The Atlanta Constitution
Notes from the State Capital
[From the Savannah Advertiser]

Atlanta, GA, January 16, 1875.
What a medley Atlanta is! Such an odd, indescribable conglomeration of
people, houses and things, as is worth a journey across the state to see!
One can compare it with no other city, for there is not even a suggestion
of the aristocratic repose of Savannah or Augusta, the state of elegance
of Macon, or the clean thriftness of Columbus, in its bizarre irregularity
and unique compositeness, which make, somehow, a queer sort of attraction
for the looker on. The style of architecture is as nondescript as it is
various. Dusty coal yeards and shabby bakeries ensconce themselves under
the shadow of brown-stone fronts, and towering Mansard roofs; one-story
huts and tumble down rookries, fit only to feed fires, flank pretentious
brick structures, with much ornamentation of balconies and gables; old
houses, fast falling into decay, come close upon smart, new ones, with
over-grown pinnacles and gaudy trimmings; untidy green groceries, in mean
shops, exhale their sickening odors of stale vegetables and fruits, under
the very eaves of cozy cottage residences, while undertakers' shops, dry
good stores, and jewelry establishments mix themselves up in bewildering confusion!...
