Wilcox County was formed 22 December 1857 from Dooly, Irwin, and Pulaski
counties. It was Georgia's 124th county, and was named for General Mark
Wilcox, a state legislator and one of the founders of the Georgia Supreme
Court. The Ocmulgee River forms the county's eastern boundary. The county
seat is Abbeville. Other incorporated cities include Pineview, Pitts and Rochelle.

Wilcox County is mainly an agricultural community. It is Georgia's second
largest producer of watermelons. Other products include peanuts, cotton,
and timber.

The population of Wilcox County in the year 2000 was 8,577. The main
newspaper is The Cordele Dispatch.
